Abuse

What is Abuse?

Abuse is the word used to describe someone hurting another person on purpose.  Abuse can take different forms, ranging from someone taking advantage of another person, to someone being hurt physically.  It can happen just once, or it could happen all the time.  No matter how often it happens, or what form it takes, it is still not right.
There are several different types of abuse including physical, emotional, sexual, neglect and discriminatory.
Sometimes more than one type of abuse can happen at one time.

Who abuses or where can it happen?

The person who is responsible for the abuse could be someone the person being mistreated knows or a stranger.  Abuse can take place anywhere.  It could be in someone's home, in a residential or nursing home, a hospital, at work, at a day centre, at college, in supported housing or in the street.

Report it

If you are being abused or have concerns about someone, report it as soon as possible.  You can contact your local police or local council.
