Out-of-hours GP Services

PELC provide the GP out-of-hours service for patients registered to surgeries in  Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Redbridge, Waltham Forest and West Essex. We are here to help if you develop an urgent medical need when your surgery is closed.

How do I access the GP out-of-hours?

The GP out of hours service is available:

Weekdays: 6.30pm - 8am
Weekends: 6.30pm Friday - 8am Monday
Bank Holidays: 24hrs

If you call your GP surgery out of hours your call will be directed to the NHS 111 service. Alternatively you can call dial 111 directly*.

One of our team of highly trained NHS 111 advisers will take your details and assess your symptoms. If from the assessment you need to speak to or be seen by a GP, the 111 adviser will refer you to the PELC GP Out-of-hours service.

*Please note: If you are not registered with a GP surgery, please call NHS 111 for clinical assessment and help.  If your call is about a life threatening emergency, dial 999.

How does the GP Out of Hours Service work?

Once the NHS 111 team has referred you to us we will decide on the most appropriate care for you based on your symptoms. This may be:

  • Providing you with advice for home treatment
  • Arranging for you to be seen at a local Primary Care Centre
  • If clinically appropriate, arranging for a health care professional to visit you at home.

Things to note

If you need a routine appointment with your own GP surgery, District Nurse or Dentist, you will need to call during normal surgery hours and speak to the receptionist on duty at your surgery for these services.  We are not able to make routine appointments on your behalf or issue routine prescriptions and we do not have access to your detailed patient records.

Following your call to the PELC GP Out of Hours Service, details of your consultation with the PELC healthcare team will be electronically transferred to your GP’s surgery by the next working day.  This ensures that your GP is fully aware of any changes in your health and is able to continue to provide the best possible care for you.
